State and Federal Programs
Programs -- Improper land use practices have caused; serious wind and water erosion, runoff of polluting materials, increased costs to maintain agricultural productivity, increased energy costs and increased flood damage to the land of Minnesota. Landowners/renters have the responsibility to implement practices to correct these conditions and conserve the soil and water resources of Minnesota. Listed below are some of the programs that can be used to correct these problems.
Cost Share Program -- Landowners can receive up to 75% state cost share on approved practices such as; Riparian Buffers, Grassed Waterways, Field Windbreaks, Diversions, Dams, Grade Stabilization Structures, Animal Waste Systems and Streambank Stabilization Projects.
Local Water Management Plan -- Surface and ground water quality can be protected and promoted by this plan.
Wetland Conservation Act -- We are fulfilling the state requirements to protect wetlands.
Feedlot Program -- We issue permits, register feedlots and do on-site investigations of feedlots in Norman County as delegated by the state of Minnesota.
Well Monitoring Program -- Our office measures ground water on 7 wells every month and 4 wells twice a year. This program is funded from the DNR.
Rainfall Monitoring Program -- 10 volunteers from around the county record daily precipitation. This information is sent to the state climatology office. If you would like to volunteer for this program, call our office. We provide the rain gauge and forms for volunteering.
AIS Program - Our office is in charge of the Aquatics Invasive Species (AIS) for Norman County. We will be educating folks on the prevention of AIS through newspapers, brochures, radio and local events.
Discovery Farms Water Monitoring - Our office works with the Mn Dept of Ag and Mn Agricultural Water Resource Center (MAWRC) to test water samples for soil and nutrient losses in 2 locations in the county. These samples are taken from both surface runoff and tile drainage.
Mn Ag Water Quality Certification Program - This voluntary program certifies farmers for managing the land within their operation in a way that protects water quality. Those who implement and maintain approved farm management practices will be certified and in turn obtain regulatory certainty for a period of 10 years.
